    How much does a new driveway cost in Norwich?

    There is no honest single figure. Two driveways of the same size on the same street can cost very differently, because the price is set by the ground, not the surface.

    As a rough order: tarmac is the least expensive per square metre, block paving sits in the middle, and resin bound is usually the highest. But the biggest variable on any driveway is the sub-base — and much of the Norwich area sits on boulder clay, which usually needs a deeper base than people expect.

    Industry cost guides put excavation and disposal at around £28 per square metre and the sub-base at around £23 per square metre, before a single block or drop of tarmac is laid. Roughly a third of a properly built driveway is groundwork you will never see again — and it is the part a cheap quote leaves out.

    A tarmac driveway usually takes one to two days. Block paving takes three to five days for a typical domestic driveway. Resin bound takes one day over a sound existing base, or three to five days if a new base is needed. Wet weather or frost can extend all three.

    If you are laying more than 5m² of impermeable surface in a front garden, you need either planning permission or a drainage solution that keeps the water on your own property. Permeable surfaces such as resin bound normally avoid this. If you are creating a new access from the road, you will also need a dropped kerb from Norfolk County Council.
