Block Paving and Driveways in Wymondham

Block paving in Wymondham usually comes down to the age of your house. Homes on the estates built since the 1990s tend to have space for a wider drive, but the original groundwork doesn’t always last. Closer to the Abbey, your front garden may fall inside a conservation area, and the council can have a say on what you lay. Expert Paving and Landscaping installs new driveways across the town and repairs ones that have sunk.

What we install: block paving for Wymondham's estates and older streets

Wymondham is about nine miles southwest of Norwich, just off the A11. Around 17,500 people live in the parish.

Many of them live in newer housing. Estates went up off Norwich Road, Harts Farm Road and Silfield Road from the 1990s onwards, and South Norfolk’s Area Action Plan, adopted in 2015, allowed for at least 2,200 more homes up to 2026.

On these estates, most jobs involve widening a drive or fixing one that has dropped. A drive that has dropped is usually a base problem, not a surface one, and the only way to know is to lift a section and look. If the base is firm the blocks can be re-laid. If it has moved, it must come out and be rebuilt properly.

In the older streets, frontages are often short and your choice of materials is tighter. The next section explains why.

Council rules for Wymondham driveways: planning, conservation and dropped kerbs

You may need to deal with two councils before work starts. South Norfolk Council covers planning and both conservation areas. Norfolk County Council covers dropped kerbs. They don’t share applications, so each form goes to a different office.

Our guide to planning permission for a driveway in Norfolk explains the national rule and which council deals with what.

Planning permission with South Norfolk Council

South Norfolk Council handles planning in Wymondham. Breckland covers Attleborough, not Wymondham. It runs jointly with Broadland District Council and shares one website. Front gardens follow the national rule. A hard surface over 5m² needs planning permission if rainwater runs onto the road. To avoid applying, drain water into a lawn or border, fit a soakaway, or lay permeable block paving or resin-bound surfacing. At our site visit, we'll tell you if permission is likely. South Norfolk makes the final decision.

    Wymondham's two conservation areas

South Norfolk has 52 conservation areas, two in Wymondham. Partner council Broadland has 21. The Wymondham Conservation Area, designated in 1974, covers the historic town centre. Its 2012 appraisal counted 220 listed buildings, so check your house's status first. Wymondham (The Lizard) is far smaller: cottages and meadows on the Tiffey valley's southern slopes, bounded by the Forncett railway line and the A11. In both, new driveways may need consent for materials and appearance. One appraisal document guides every decision.

    Dropped kerbs

To drive across the pavement, you need a dropped kerb. That's a separate application to Norfolk County Council. The county's 2026 prices are £193.92 for the non-refundable application and around £3,050 for the works. We don't set or collect these council charges. Only the council's approved contractor can build the crossing, not us or any other driveway company. Officers check visibility, nearby junctions and the cables or pipes underneath. Refusal costs you the fee, so ask us first whether approval looks likely.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you fix a sinking block paving driveway in Wymondham?

Usually. If the base is firm the blocks can be lifted and re-laid. If it has shifted, the base has to be rebuilt first. Either way it needs checking before anyone can quote properly.

Check the boundary maps for Wymondham and Wymondham (The Lizard) on southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk. If you’re inside one, speak to the council first.

Only if the hard surface in your front garden is over 5m² and drains onto the road. Permeable block paving and resin bound avoid this. A conservation area may add its own consent.
